Objectives: 

 

Students will identify common words in the Arabic language and identify themselves, family members, as well as the country they are from, and describe something they enjoy doing most in Arabic. They will create a Piktochart to display images of their family, where they are from, and what they like to do best. They will distinguish the various sounds of the Arabic letters, and construct basic knowledge of some of the beginning alphabets in the language. Students will critique others work and measure, as well as support each other.  

 

Description of Technologies:

 

PiktoCharts: This is a platform to create digital presentations and there are many colorful presentation templates to choose from. The intuitive tools used to make the presentation are simple and easy to use.  

SeeSaw: It's a simple, easy to use, digital portfolio and the students work can easily be shared with the teacher's approval and to parents as well. Students can create their work and share it. It's a learning journal to keep, and it empowers students of all ages to document through uploading or taking pictures of what they learn throughout the class lesson. It's student-driven, and teachers use it to keep a digital portfolio of all of their students work. 

AlefBaTa Arabic Learning Games: A website that contains simple games in Arabic, and it covers the basics of the language in context. The games are organized from easy, intermediate, to hard. The games cover various topics such as focusing on the pronunciation of the letters, different forms of writing the letter [in the beginning, middle, and end], reading and writing simple words, and constructing simple sentences.

Lesson(s):

This unit will be completed in 3 lessons, thus, 50 minutes per class period. 

 

Day 1: 

 

1) Students will be introduced to a new language: Arabic. Arabic is a unique language and they will 

    be told the following points about it (10 minutes):

        a) It's written from right to left.   

        b) There are different forms of pronouns.

        c) The letters connect to each other, with an exception of only 6 letters in the alphabet.

        d) There are 28 letters in the Arabic alphabets. 

 

2) Students will listen to the YouTube Video of the Arabic Alphabets (3 minutes) 

 

 

 

3) Students will then discuss what letter stood out to them, and we will practice it in class together (2 minutes)

 

4) Afterwards, the students will be introduced to the project they will do in Arabic. The topic of the project is "All About Me." They will find pictures of their family, a country where they are from, and one thing they like to do. They will make a Piktochart to present to the class. (10 minutes).

 

5) The students will be given the basic words in English and learn the Arabic words for Mom (Ummi), Dad (Abbi), Brother (Akhi), Sister (Okhti), Grandpa (Jaddi), Grandma (Jaddadti), me (Ana) We will go around the classroom, and learn the names of the countries in Arabic, such as Germany is Almaniyah, Japan is Yaban, India is Al-Hind, Egypt is Masr, Europe is Oropa, and so forth. We will also go around and ask about what is one thing they like to do, whether it's swimming (Asbah), running (Arkod), drawing (Arsom), coloring/painting (Alawen), basketball (Korat AlSalaah), soccer (Korat Al-Qadam), football (Korat Al-Qadam Al-Amriciyah), or anything other activity will be translated and provided for the students to learn how to say.  We will use SeeSaw to demonstrate this knowledge. Therefore, everyone will have an iPad, and there will be a screen share with the iPad to show how to write and say it. The students will try to write the words on the iPad and record their voices. (20 minutes)

 

6) Students will then be given an introduction on how to use Piktochart and explore it on their own. They will create their own account and familiarize themselves with uploading images and choosing a presentation they like best. (10 minutes)

 

7) Wrap up the lesson with having the students review the basic terms they need to know for their project. Homework will be to collect images they would like to share for this project and bring them to class. They can also upload them to their Piktochart for homework. (5 minutes)

 

Day 2

 

1) Students are re-introduced to the basic letters and words that will be used in the project. (5 minutes)

 

2) The students will play games to familiarize themselves with some Arabic letters on this website: www.alefbataa.com/games (20 minutes):

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3) Students will then open Piktochart, and continue uploading their pictures they got from home. If they have already uploaded their images, they may begin writing the titles for each picture. After they write the titles for each picture, they will take a picture of it and upload it to their Piktocharts (20 minutes)

 

4) Students will wrap up their Piktocharts, and discuss one new thing they learned today (5 minutes).  

 

Day 3: 

 

1) Students will continue working on their Piktocharts and work on their format and presentation (25 minutes)

 

2) Next, students will practice their presentations and words used for the project with another classmate. (20 minutes)

 

3) Students will make sure they are following the guidelines and rubric for the presentation and practice the presentation for homework. (5 minutes)

 

Day 4:  

 

1) Students will start presenting their Piktocharts to the classroom using the Arabic language and pinpointing their family members, the country where they are from, and one thing they like to do in Arabic (45 minutes)
